Highlights of the Lehigh Valley Auto Show
ACTIVITIES
• GM and Ford Ride Drive Program: From noon-6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, you can test drive 20 new GM/Ford/Lincoln/Chrysler cars, including the Chevrolet Cruze, the Buick Regal and the GMC Acadia. A bus will transport you from Stabler to Lehigh’s Mountaintop campus for the test drives. The program is free.
•Nationwide Insurance simulator: Partnering with Pennsylvania State Police, Nationwide has brought a simulator through which drivers can experience the dangers of texting while driving. Research has shown that texting or use of cell phones while driving increases the risk of a crash.
•Volvo City Safety: Climb into a Volvo XC60 and discover Volvo’s City Safety System in which the car automatically applies the brakes and stops the car under certain dangerous conditions. Also see the actual Volvo XC-90 that was tested in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration frontal New Car Assessment Program crash test. The XC-90, a mid-size luxury crossover SUV designed to absorb frontal impacts, received the highest five-star rating.
•Automotive Tuner Spa: Add-Onz Vehicle Accessories of Allentown sponsors a “spa” where you can see all the ways a vehicle can be customized. Check out the custom cars on display loaded up with aftermarket accessories, including wide wheels, spoilers, wings and special hoods.
CARS
•Saab 94X: The Lehigh Valley Auto Show is the first place on the East Coast showing the 2011 Saab 94X and only the second in the country. The car debuted at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November. The mid-size crossover features a sporty design and car-like handling.
•Chevrolet Volt: You can not only see the Volt, the first all-electric car to be featured at the Lehigh Valley Auto Show, but you can also test drive it. The winner of the 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the five-door, four-passenger Volt is the first vehicle to provide the benefits of an electric vehicle without the range limitations of previous models. It has a lithium-ion battery pack and electric drive unit to allow it to go up to 379 miles on a charge.
•Hyundai Equus: The high-end luxury sedan from the manufacturer known for its affordable cars is poised to tap into the highly successful luxury car market spawned by the Acura from Honda, the Infiniti from Nissan and the Lexis from Toyota. The ultimate model of the Equus is loaded with features such as a power footrest and a refrigerator in the center console.
•Nissan Murano Convertible: Nissan has introduced the first SUV convertible in its 2011 Murano. The Murano’s four-door body was redesigned into a two-door body to let the SUV support a convertible top but still retain its roomy, four-passenger interior.
•Chevy Stingray Concept Car: The 2011 Corvette Stingray Concept car, featured in the film “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen,” has a body that takes cues from the original Stingray race car, introduced in 1959. But it also draws on other Corvette design elements for its futuristic shape.
•Concours d’Elegance: The organization known for its restored antique and classic cars brings five cars to ogle — one of only six 1925 Erskine Roadsters in the world; a rare 1964 Pontiac LeMans GTO Convertible; a 1922 Studebaker Touring Light Six; an all-handmade 1933 Willys Roadster with supercharged engine and Hutch’s car from the 1970s TV series “Starsky Hutch.”
